Esther

Esther

A curious little girl with a head full of jokes.

Esther has lived in the little cottage with the round blue door all her life. When she was small, her grandmother told her that the house was built on a lucky spot — "where ordinary days like to turn into stories." Esther believed her, and she was right. She has honey-blonde hair down to her knees (she refuses to cut it, because "you never know when you'll need a rope"), freckles from spending every sunny day outside, and a head absolutely full of jokes. Her dream is to collect so many funny stories that she can fill a whole book. What makes her special isn't magic, though — it's that she notices things. A shivering bunny under the flowers. A friend who needs cheering up. A rainy day that's secretly perfect for drawing. Esther never misses a chance to be kind, and that's where all her adventures begin.

Mama Bunny

Mama Bunny

Gentle and full of cuddles

Mama Bunny is snow-white and the wisest creature for miles around. Before she came to Esther's garden, she lived in the big meadow beyond the hill, where she was famous for solving problems no one else could — like the time she figured out how to get honey out of a beehive by simply asking politely. She knows a little about everything: which clouds mean rain, which berries make the best jam, and exactly how long to hug someone who's sad (until they stop being sad, and then three seconds more). She speaks softly, but when Mama Bunny says something, everyone listens — even Daddy Bunny, eventually.

Daddy Bunny

Daddy Bunny

Big and silly

Daddy Bunny is pink from ears to toes, and he'll happily tell you why: long ago, he fell asleep in a raspberry patch on the warmest day of summer and woke up pink forever. (Mama Bunny just smiles when he tells it. Nobody knows the real story — maybe there isn't one. Maybe some bunnies are simply born as cheerful as their colour.) His left ear always flops forward, because he's spent his whole life tilting his head to listen for the next joke. He's the loudest laugher in the family, the official taster of everything Esther bakes, and the one who always says "one more game!" at bedtime. He may not be the wisest bunny — but he is definitely the happiest.

Little Bunny

Little Bunny

Tiny and brave!

Little Bunny is the youngest, white like Mama, with a pale pink bow between her ears that she got from Esther on her very first birthday in the cottage — and she has never once taken it off. She's small, but don't let that fool you: she has the sharpest memory in the family (she wins every matching game), the highest hop (higher than Daddy's ears!), and the biggest courage. When the family goes adventuring, Little Bunny is always the first one through the gate. Her dream is to one day be as clever as Mama, as funny as Daddy, and as kind as Esther — but everyone agrees she's already something even better: exactly herself.

The Lazy Dragon

The Lazy Dragon

Big, green and mostly asleep

Nobody knows how long the dragon has slept in the dark corner of the garden, behind the old apple tree where the ivy grows thickest. Esther found him on a rainy Tuesday when she followed a sound she thought was thunder — it was snoring. He is moss-green from nose to tail, with a cream-coloured tummy, peach-coloured wings he almost never bothers to unfold, and two small horns that are perfect for hanging a lantern on. He is not fierce. He has never once breathed fire (he says it gives him hiccups). What he does do is listen: to jokes, to worries, to rain on the leaves — usually with his eyes closed, so you're never quite sure whether he's asleep. He isn't. When it really matters, the dragon is always awake — and his wing is the driest, warmest place in the whole garden to wait out a storm.
